Int'l students from Zhejiang University won gold and silver medals in Speech Contest

      In order to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Chinese reform and opening up and build a good platform for international student education in Zhejiang Province, "New Era, Foreign Students Say" themed Speech Contest, an event of series of activities of " Mengxing Zhejiang�������㽭)" was held on November 24 in Hangzhou. 89 foreign students from 37 universities in the province participated in the competition. Three of them are from Zhejiang University (ZJU), they are Meilia (л����) from Indonesia, Christian(������) from Democratic Republic of the Congo and Taing Yuykiet(�����) from Cambodia.

     The speech contest consisted of the preliminary competition and the final. In the preliminary competition, 89 students were randomly divided into six groups, the first two of each group entered the final. All 3 students from ZJU had excellent performances and are qualified for the final.

In the final, 13 students from 8 universities competed fiercely. Based on personal experience and knowledge, competitors spoke on the topics of China��s four new inventions, China's folk culture and the development of Zhejiang in new era and so on. Their stories got hot applause from judges and audiences.

      Taing Yuykiet described Hangzhou as gentle and brave, full of humanity and innovation. There is no word to describe how much he loves Hangzhou. Meilia talked about her love to Wuzhen Town, Zhejiang and the rapid development of Zhejiang Province. Christian told his Chinese story, as an African boy travelled from north China to south China, experiencing the diversified, inclusive and wonderful Zhejiang. Their excellent performance was highly recognized by the judges and the audience. In the end, Taing Yuykiet became the number one with 95.86 points, Meilia ranked as the second with 95.58 points and Christian was ranked as the third with 94.73 points. According to the award setting rule of the contest, Taing Yuykiet and Meilia won the gold medals, and Christian won the silver medal.

      Ms. Wang Sainan, counsellor of international college, as the advisor of the contestants of ZJU and a judge of the preliminary competition, attended the event.
