Guide for the 3rd “Stories of China Retold in English” Challenge for International Students Category

1.Brief Introduction

In order to promote cultural exchange and communication among global youth, as well as to showcase achievements of international Chinese language education, New Channel International Education Group, together with China Education Television, is holding the 3rd “Stories of China Retold in English” Challenge.


2.Rounds of the Challenge and Schedule

The selection of the Foreign Students Category includes four rounds: Preliminary Round, Intermediate Round, Advanced Round and Grand Final.

The deadline for submission of works in the preliminary round is December 16th, 2022.


3.Language in Performance

Participants are required to present in a language other than their native language.

English native speakers should perform in Chinese and Non-English Native Speakers could use either Chinese or English.


4.Requirements

The contestants could prepare their entries in one of three forms below:


(1)Recitation

Contestants can choose stories from the book Stories of China Retold in English (Elementary Stage), or choose one of the 8 recommended articles to recite, present performance during video recording as if you were on the real stage, and submit a 1.5-minute video online.

(8 recommended articles will be given after registration)

Follow the official WeChat account CN Stories. By typing “来华留学生组”, you can download the recommended materials.


(2)Self-Introduction

The contestant will introduce himself/herself.

The content of the introduction shall contain Chinese elements, which include but are not limited to Chinese cultural icons, Chinese customs, Chinese great figures, Chinese achievements, Chinese arts, or Chinese spirit.

Steps: Contestants will introduce themselves in front of the camera, present your performance during video recording as if you were on the real stage, and submit a 1.5-minute video online.


(3)Story Writing & Retelling

Contestants shall write a short story based on Chinese elements. Please be careful not to use the contestants themselves as the subject of the story. Chinese elements include but are not limited to Chinese cultural icons, Chinese customs, Chinese great figures, Chinese achievements, Chinese arts, or Chinese spirit. Your story should have a clear narrative structure, including a “beginning” (introducing the setting and main charactors), a “body” (describing the main events and the climax of the story), and an “ending” (creative endings are especially encouraged).

Steps: Contestants will write a creative story and read/recite it on a simulated stage, and submit both the story script and a 1.5-minute audio online.


5. Registration

Please scan the following QR code to get into the Group via DingTalk, and teachers will offer instructions for the registration and upcoming process.

The deadline for registration is October 21st, 2022.
