On December 8, exciting news came from the grand finale of the “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” National College Students' Foreign Language Ability Contest. Liaying Rebeca Avendano Chin, a third-year undergraduate student from Panama majoring in Chinese Language (International Students) at the International College of Zhejiang University, won the National Runner-up Award, ranking second nationwide in the English Group – International Communication Comprehensive Ability Track.

The 2025 “FLTRP·ETIC Cup” National College Students' Foreign Language Ability Contest, themed “Understanding Contemporary China and Bridging the World,” was conducted in three stages: university-level, provincial, and national competitions. Competing over a span of seven months from the preliminary rounds to the finals, Rebeca successfully advanced through each stage and stood out among over 1,100 finalists at the national level to earn her place in the grand finale. Her final speech, titled “Education: The Challenge and the Solution,” received unanimous praise from both the judging panel and the audience.

 “For me, public speaking is not just a skill, but also an important bridge connecting me to the world. In May of this year, on the recommendation of my English Public Speaking course instructor, I signed up for the contest, giving myself a chance to go all out. The seven-month preparation journey made me deeply feel the power of language that transcends time and space. Throughout this competition, I drew on my study experiences in China and at Zhejiang University, trying to tell China's story in English. Thanks to three years of studying Chinese Language at ZJU, I have gained a deeper understanding of China's language, culture, and national conditions. I integrated my professional knowledge, learning experiences, and reflections on the contest theme. In the finals, representing Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang University, and the international student community, I shared my interpretation of Confucius and presented the 'Chinese approach' to education development. China's universal education system, Project Hope, and a series of educational reforms have enabled more and more young people to change their destinies through knowledge. And as the young generation thrives, so does the nation—China's rapid development is a powerful testament to the transformative power of learning and education. I hope that in the coming year, more international students will step onto this stage, becoming bridges connecting China and the world, and lending our voices to a brighter future for all.”
