To implement the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and President Xi Jinping's important statements on building China into a strong maritime country, enhance Chinese Government Scholarship students' understanding of China's achievements in marine science and technology as well as marine ecological civilization, and promote academic exchange and collaboration among universities participating in the Marine Scholarship of China, the 2026 “Experience China: Exploring the Blue Ocean” Academic Exchange Program was held in Yantai, Shandong Province, from June 15 to 18, 2026. The event was organized by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and hosted by Harbin Engineering University. Three international students from Zhejiang University (ZJU), together with more than 40 Chinese and international faculty members and students from Harbin Engineering University, Xiamen University, Ocean University of China, Tongji University, and other institutions, gained first-hand insights into China's advances in marine science and technology.

Centred on the theme of “Marine Carbon Sinks and Sustainable Development,” the four-day program featured academic seminars, field visits, hands-on learning activities, and cultural exchanges, showcasing China's integrated development in marine science—from fundamental research and ecological conservation to engineering applications.

During the event, participants presented their research at the CIMC Raffles Cup Challenge. Multinational student teams from five universities engaged in academic discussions on cutting-edge topics, including marine carbon sinks, marine renewable energy, marine ecosystem conservation, intelligent offshore engineering equipment, and green low-carbon technologies. Following evaluation by an expert panel, Zhejiang University's team from the School of Oceanography received the Outstanding Presentation Award for its presentation entitled “Beyond the Coastline: The Hidden Value of China's Blue Ecosystems,” demonstrating the University's innovative research achievements and academic excellence in the field of blue carbon.

During the study tour, participants visited the Yantai Salvage Bureau of the Ministry of Transport, its shipyard, and the Genghai No.1 Marine Ranching Complex. Through on-site visits and practical learning, students gained a deeper understanding of China's maritime emergency rescue and salvage system, offshore engineering equipment maintenance capabilities, and remarkable achievements in marine ranching and blue carbon ecosystem conservation. These experiences offered vivid insights into China's efforts to advance marine science and pursue sustainable ocean development.

As an important participating institution in the Marine Scholarship of China, Zhejiang University remains committed to serving China's national maritime strategy by cultivating globally minded and innovative professionals in marine-related disciplines. Attending the study tour to Yantai City as an international student was an incredibly valuable and enriching experience. The conference focused on blue carbon technologies and marine ecosystem protection, which are among the most important and rapidly developing topics today. Preparing our proposal and listening to presentations from other participating teams significantly enhanced my knowledge and understanding of these fields. The study tour also provided an excellent opportunity to interact with international students from different universities, allowing us to exchange ideas about our research and share our experiences of studying and living in China. In addition, we visited many remarkable places in Yantai, including museums, fish farms, and shipyards, which greatly deepened my understanding of China's history, technological advancements, and rich cultural heritage.
