Together for a greener planet | International Student "Sustainability Month" Event Recap

From November 23rd to November 26th, with the support of the Foundation of Student Associations of Zhejiang University, the International Student Union (ISU) successfully organized Sustainability Month - a series of events designed to raise awareness among students, directing their attention to the environmental challenges our planet faces, and inspiring them to take action for an eco-friendly lifestyle. Through a variety of meaningful and creative green initiatives, participants were encouraged to contribute towards a more sustainable future together.Sustainability Month was packed with versatile activities, including online environmental challenges, offline discussions, and creative up-cycling and recycling. The event kicked off with a collaboration between ISU Academics Department and the ZJU Foreign Language Association (FLA), hosting both English Corner and Chinese Corner. These events, that attracted many participants, featured engaging games and thought-provoking discussions around sustainable living. Students were able to make friends from different countries and share culturally diverse approaches towards environment protection, they actively engaged in green discussions, that helped them enhance their awareness of ecological issues.On November 25th, four departments of ISU joined forces to create a well-rounded eco-experience. Through various interactive activities, they provided a platform for the wider Zhejiang University community to explore and actively contribute to sustainable development.The Culture & Arts Department, under the theme of Eco-Arts, led students to create imaginative pieces using eco-friendly materials like used paper, leaves, and flowers. Making these artworks not only allowed the students to showcase their talents and creativity but also to learn sustainability concepts and experience more sustainable methods to create art while protecting the environment.The Welfare & Volunteering Department launched an initiative named Bottle to Bloom, encouraging students to repurpose used plastic bottles into unique flowerpots. This activity highlighted the value of up-cycling, giving participants a chance to take practical steps towards environmental conservation.The Sports & Recreation Department organized “Paper Plane Competition” and “Cardboard Boomerang Workshop”, emphasizing the importance of recycling by advocating the creative use of old paper and cardboard. These games allowed students to see past the single use of these recyclable materials, providing an enjoyable and friendly environment for it.To raise awareness about carbon footprints and methods to reduce them, the Health Services Department guided students on how to calculate their personal carbon footprints and, through fun and interactive quizzes, brought attention to the environment impact of the students’ everyday actions and the importance of cultivating green practices.Furthermore, the Creative Media Department shared tips on eco-friendly habits and environment protection concepts through social media, creating a video titled Small Efforts Lead to Big Change”. This aimed to encourage every student to adopt simple sustainable practices in their daily lives.Following the successful conclusion of the Sustainability Month series, we extend our heartfelt thanks to every participant, whose enthusiasm illuminated this journey! Arriving with Autumn Rhymes, Attending the Feast of Arts | The Autumn Culture & Arts Performance of ISAG Successfully Concluded

On November 5th, the Zhejiang University International Student Art Group (ISAG)’s “Maple Rhyme” autumn theatrical performance was successfully held at the Zijingang Campus Cultural Plaza. This  event  aims to enrich the campus cultural life, showcase  the cultural and artistic diversity of Zhejiang University students, and promote exchanges and  communications between Chinese and foreign students. The atmosphere was warm, adding infinite warmth to this cold autumn day. Sharing Dazzling Arts under the Rising MapleAt 4:30 p.m., the sunshine fell on the Cultural Square, lighting up the stage belonging to the international student art group. With melodious and lively music , confident and clear dance steps, performers from various countries including Thailand, Morocco, Malaysia and other countries sang and danced a cheerful Live While We are Young, which showed the excellent spirit of international students, attracting  large student audience. The performers used a variety of art forms including singing, dancing, crosstalk, Chinese orchestra, and 24 festive drums etc., to give wonderful performances, showing the diverse styles of international students.As the sun sets, the sea of stars illuminates the stage. The students showed the charm of diverse arts with beautiful songs, cheerful dances and dynamic drum rhythms. The audience gave the warmest applause and cheers, praising the performers!A Feast of Diversified Culture and ArtThe traditional Indian dance Desi Boys, Filipino song Pasilyoa, 24 festive drums from Malaysia,and the traditional Vanuatu dance Paradisia...,  performers from all over the world vividly displayed the culture of their countries with sincere emotions,  breaking the shackles of language, conveying enthusiasm through singing and dancing.Meanwhile, the students also step out of their comfort zones,  singing songs in different languages, learning folk dances from other cultures, etc.. Duanwu Carnival for International Students Held Successfully

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanyang Festival, is one of the four major traditional festivals in China. Every year on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Lunar Calendar, the populace worship gods and ancestors, pray for blessings, and ward off evil spirits on this day.On the afternoon of June 21, 2023, 55 international students from 19 countries gathered to enjoy traditional practices and activities, such as making zongzi and wearing Hanfu, with teachers from the International College.Students LEE KHAR JIE and CHUA HANXIN from Malaysia served as hosts of the event. They introduced the background and related customs of the Dragon Boat Festival.The carnival consisted of seven mini games, including making zongzi, trying out Hanfu, pitch-pot, etc. Students obtain a stamp every time they complete a game, which prompted everyone to check-in at each of the game booths. Wrapping zongzi. Under the guidance of teachers, the students folded the bamboo leaves and bundled the ingredients and fillings together.Hanging scented sachets. Students concentrate on threading needles, meticulously bringing together a piece of floral fabric and a handful of mugwort to make beautiful yet practical herb-scented sachets.Donning Hanfu. The Second Academic Salon for International Students Successfully Held

The second event of the International Students Academic Salon was successfully held on May 24th in Zijingang campus. Hosted by the International College and organized by the International Students Academic Club, the International Students Academic Salon is a series of engaging activities. It serves as a platform for academic exchange and discussion among Chinese and international students, fostering academic innovation, improving expression abilities, and shaping a global perspective. The theme of this Academic Salon was Engineering and Technology in which Dr. Muhammad Awais (Pakistan), a 2023 alumnus from College of Electrical Engineering, doctoral student Ali Matin Nazar (Iranian) from College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Shabab Hussain (Pakistan) from School of Materials and Engineering, Ijaz Haroon (Pakistan) from College of Computer Science and Technology and Kazim Raza (Pakistan) from College of Optical Science and Engineering prepared outstanding presentations on the given theme and shared their research techniques and works with the audience. Muhammad Sajjad, from Pakistan, a doctoral student majoring in Civil Engineering and Architecture, hosted the Academic Salon which was attended by more than 20 international and Chinese students from various departments.The first speaker of the event was Mr. Ali Matin Nazar, a 2022 Ph.D. student in civil engineering, hailing from Iran. He shared his research experiences on Harnessing the Power of Innovation in Research. He provided a comprehensive introduction to various methodologies and approaches that can assist students in their research work. He discussed his own innovations and patents, emphasizing that he was able to develop these ideas using creative methodologies. He advised the students in the audience that reading more and staying up-to-date with knowledge are the best ways to advance in the field of research.Mr. Shabab Hussain, a 2019 Ph.D. student majoring in Materials Science shared his experience on Nanomaterials-Based Desalination Membranes. He presented experimental evidence showing that novel porous nanomaterials-based advanced membranes can efficiently desalinate salty water, potentially replacing conventional polymeric membranes.Mr. Ijaz Haroon, a Ph.D. student majoring in Computer Science, presented a report titled “From Science Fiction to Reality: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Our Daily Life”. He discussed the multifarious applications of artificial intelligence in different fields including healthcare, education, business, entertainment, and scientific research. He said that all the while we are benefitting from this revolutionary technology, we should also pay heed to potential risks related with the unethical and socially unacceptable usage of artificial intelligence. Mr. Kazim Raza, who is pursuing a doctoral degree at the School of Optical Science and Engineering from 2021 session, presented on the potential of deep learning and single-spectrum ultraviolet imaging for detecting hazardous and noxious substances spills. These spills can cause severe damage to both offshore and onshore ecology, and his research aims to develop effective detection methods.Dr. Muhammad Awais, a post-doctoral fellow in electrical engineering, gave an online presentation to share his research results on futuristic high-voltage insulation materials for advanced and efficient electrical power equipment operating under extreme environments of high electric field, high frequency, and high temperatures. His research outcomes have been successfully applied to enhance the power density and efficiency of medium-frequency transformers and power electronic packaging devices.After each presentation, the students in the audience were given the opportunity to ask questions. The thoughtful and comprehensive questions from the audience reflected their keen interest in the topics presented, making the Academic Salon an engaging and intellectually stimulating session. Mr. Lu Zhengzhong, Deputy Dean of the International College, and teachers from the Students Affairs Office also participated in the activity.Dr. Liu Cong, a doctoral counsellor of the International College and the mentor of the International Students Academic Club, said in her speech that the path to academic research is challenging yet exciting. International College will continue to build a platform for academic exchange and discussion for Chinese and international students, enlightening scientific thinking and broadening academic horizons.Mr. Lu Zhengzhong, the Deputy Dean of the International College expressed gratitude to the participants and the speakers for their wonderful presentations and appreciated the efforts of the organizers in successfully conducting the Academic Salon. International Students Participated in the “Open Day” Activity at Hangzhou Hikvision

On June 9, 2023, thirty-eight international students of Zhejiang university from 15 countries paid a visit to Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Ltd. for study and exploration. They participated in the “open day” activity.Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Ltd., established in 2001, is an innovative  technology company that committed to serving various industries through its cutting-edge technologies of machine perception, artificial intelligence, and big data, leading the future of AIoT. The company has been working in the fields of security and AIoT for over 20 years, with its business covering more than 150 countries and regions worldwide.The company's representative provided detailed introductions about Hikvision's development history, business scope, and the establishment of overseas branches. Two employees from the Indonesian and Malaysian branches were invited to share their work experiences and achievements with the students online. The students showed great interest and actively participated in the discussions.After the discussion, students visited the company's exhibition hall. Zhejiang Dream Carnival Series Event - International Students of Zhejiang University Visit "Huangdi Jinyun"

International students from International College went to Jinyun County in southern Zhejiang Province as participators of “Zhejiang Dream Carnival” on March 4-5 which is a cultural tour for foreign students. This event intended to help international students experience traditional Chinese culture and Zhejiang folk customs, and perceive the achievements of rural revitalization and development in Zhejiang. Our 24 international students from 15 countries including Russia, Serbia, India, Korea and Malaysia went to ‘Huangdi Jinyun’ altogether with other international students from 6 other universities in Zhejiang Province. They fully appreciated the beauty of Zhejiang’s ecological environment among the green mountains and clear waters, had a sense of Zhejiang’s cultural connotation through local folk customs, and obtained a better understanding of Zhejiang’s historical deposits. Therefore, the theme South China is a land of poetry and painting, as Zhejiang is a place of vitality was vividly demonstrated by the picturesque landscape of Jinyun. In the morning of March 4, the international students came to visit the Circular Characteristic Farm in Huanglong. In the square-inch live room displayed the vast world where digital technology enabled rural revitalization. The Soil-less cultivation allows international students to feel the charm of China's strategy promoting agriculture by applying scientific and technological advances. The integrated industry of agriculture, culture and tourism, characterized by modern circular agriculture, informed the international students of the ever-changing development of modern agriculture in China.International students joined in the Jinyun Shaobing (Baked cake in griddle) and Jinyun noodles making one after another and worked together as one. The moment the international student could have a taste of the freshly baked Jinyun Shaobing and Jinyun noodles, the profound Chinese food culture was imperceptibly engraved in their memories.In the afternoon, international students arrived at Heyang Ancient Residence and visited the massive architectural complex built in Ming and Qing Dynasty in the thousand-year-old village. They were all impressed by the exquisite layout of ancestral halls, streets and water systems. In addition, they also learned the art of Paper Cuttings and calligraphy, and experienced the extraordinary wisdom.They interested in the life of our working people from every fold and cut of paper and every stroke they wrote.On March 5, the international students jointly participated in the grand scale ceremony of Huangdi's Ritual to gain a sense of the Chinese ancestral culture. The live blessing performance of Xuanyuan Zan in the ceremony was rich in connotation and far-reaching influence. All international students watched it carefully, and by immersing themselves in the solemn ceremony, they gradually strengthened their respect and admiration for the 5000-year-old Chinese civilization, and shared the eternal spiritual power of the Chinese nation. After the ceremony, the students continued to visit Xuanyuan Hall and the Huaizu Hall, where they gained a better understanding of the profound meaning of descendants of Yandi and Huangdi  and was fascinated by the excellent traditional Chinese culture.This event further strengthened international students' understanding of China's simple folkway and time-honored culture. Tasting the Beauty of Jinshow, Learning About the Silk Road - International Students Visit the China National Silk Museum

In the afternoon of March 10, 2023, 13 international students from 5 different countries went to the China National Silk Museum located on the shores of West Lake to experience the combination of traditional silk culture and modern technology. The first stop is the lecture hall – Cedar Room where they could experience the Jinshow World Silk Interactive Map platform developed by Zhejiang University. With a tap on the screen, they can explore the past and the present of silk culture on the world map. After they learned about the platform and experienced it by themselves, students shared the rich functions of the Jinshow platform and their own feelings in English, French, Thai, Italian, Arabic and other languages. After experiencing the platform, with the guidance of the interpreters, students visited the Silk Road Gallery, the Weaving Gallery, the Brocade Cafe, the Fashion Gallery and other venues, learned about the historical development of the Silk Road, appreciated the different styles of silk fabrics in different periods, and felt the continuous innovation of weaving technology with the progress of the times.At the same time, the advanced digital media technology in the venue also left a deep impression on the students. Our International Students' Spectacular Appearance Stunned Audience in the Event of the 16th Zhejiang Dream Carnival

The 16th Zhejiang Dream Carnival organized by the Education Department  of Zhejiang Province,Zhejiang Provincial Government Information Office , Zhejiang Provincial Foreign Affairs Office and Zhejiang Media Group was held in Hangzhou at the night of 3rd March 2023. Approximately 300 foreign students from 14 universities in Zhejiang province gathered together to put on a fascinating show.The theme of this year is “ Jiangnan  beneath painting and poetry , Zhejiang’s Vigour”, which combines traditional Chinese songs, dancing, melodrama etc. with modern elements to show the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Zhejiang. It also demonstrate unity and cohesion spirit of international students.There are 37 international students from 20 different countries including Russia, Serbia, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Iraq, Japan, Myanmar, Panama, Bolivia, Venezuela, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Costa Rica, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, the Republic of Zambia, Uganda, Vanuatu, EI Salvador, etc., gathered together for this event. After 2 months' hard work and preparation,  from music to costumes,  an exquisite  perormance was presented perfectly finally with a lively atmosphere.The international students performed the song “Love Paradise (here is Hangzhou)”in mandarin, Hangzhou Dialect and English, showing their overwhelming love for Hangzhou. Students arranged the show with unique ideas. Many cultural landmarks such as the West Lake, Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, the Asian Games and Zhejiang University and lives in schools are showed. It represents the international students’ love for Chinese culture and their admiration for the development of Zhejiang.During the video competition “My Vision of Zhejiang”, our international students achieved excellent results, winning a 3rd prize and two excellence awards. Among them, “Youth in Zhejiang” won the 3rd price, expressing the love of international students in Hangzhou.This activity provided many opportunities for international students to communicate with others and left them with unforgettable memories. The First Academic Salon for International Students and Alumni Successfully Held

On January 10th, International College of Zhejiang University hosted the first academic salon on the theme “Agriculture Science and Technology” at Zijingang Campus. It is a newly launched series of activities organized by International Students Academic Club with the aim of promoting academic exchanging, innovation and cooperation. It is also a novel academic mechanism between alumni and current students.Munazza Ijaz, from Pakistan, a doctoral student majoring in plant pathology, hosted the Salon. In her opening remarks, she said “Emerging technologies have a significant role in developing modern-day agriculture practices. For a long time, Zhejiang University has made important contributions to promote the sustainable development of agriculture in China through personnel training and scientific research. Six students and scholars shared their research experiences in the academic salon. They are Dr. Ogunyemi Solabomi Olaitan (Nigeria), a post-doctoral researcher from the college of agriculture and biotechnology, Li Yang (China), a winner of the Chu Kochen Scholarship, Xu Jin (China), a winner of the National Scholarship of China, as well as three winners of Zhejiang University’s Academic Research Excellence Award for the year 2022, Temoor Ahmed (Pakistan), Ayyaz Ahsan (Pakistan), Muhammad Noman (Pakistan). More than 20 Chinese and foreign graduate students participated in the salon.  In his presentation, Temoor Ahmed, a doctoral student at the Institute of Biotechnology, shed light on the applications of nanomaterials as a new strategy for controlling leaf blight disease and improving nutritional status of rice.Ayyaz Ahsan, a doctoral student majoring in Crop Genetics and Breeding, shared his research progress and achievements on the topic of nanotechnology as a potential tool to alleviate crop abiotic stress.Muhammad Noman, a doctoral student at the Institute of Biotechnology, presented his research findings on the application of micronutrient-based nano-pesticides in improving crop nutrition and protection.During the tea break, participants exchanged ideas on topics of interest in the report.Li Yang, a doctoral student at the Institute of Insect Sciences, shared an overview of his recent research published in the journal “Cell” in which he revealed that “flying” foreign genes play an important role in the courtship process of insects.Xu Jin, a doctoral student at the Vegetable Research Institute, discussed the interaction between SPINDLY and EIN2 in the process of tomato fruit ripening to promote ethylene signaling mediated mechanism. As alumnus of international college and college of agriculture and biotechnology, Dr. Ogunyemi Solabomi Olaitan, who is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the institute of biotechnology and crop science, discussed her research on food security and the mechanism of pathogens causing plant diseases. A Special Session of the “UN General Assembly”

On November 26th, 30 Zhejiang University students from 18 countries gathered together in a conference room resembling the General Assembly Hall of the UN. In the semicircle around the stage were sitting some audience who were dressed in their usual comfortable jeans and hoodies, but the model United Nations (UN) delegates were in suits or other formal clothes. Every delegate had a plate in front of him or her, on which the country’s name that he or she represented was printed. Voices of countries from all over the world were represented by the delegates, who were not necessarily acting on behalf of their own countries.    The International College Model United Nations (ICMUN) Conference, organized by the Zhejiang University International College, was held as a response to the 20th National Congress of the CPC and was focused on “Employment issues during the pandemic”. Foreign and local students speaking on behalf of their assigned countries shared different ways of solving unemployment caused by the pandemic, as well as strategies for supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. Participants also addressed such topics as the digital development of governments and enterprises, the protection of feminine rights and well-being, health care issues and so on.  Hazeera Begum, an Indian undergraduate student majoring in the Clinical Medicine (MBBS) at the Zhejiang University School of Medicine, prepared some valid points on how to ease the unemployment issue in India and other countries, among which there was a suggestion to “bridging the gap between academia and industry”. Hazeera emphasized that educational organizations should actively create opportunities for the youth through internships and competitions. The event was not only a platform for participants to express opinions on important topics but also “a great chance to meet well-rounded people, who are aware of global issues and have abundant knowledge about the political and economic situation of the world, and inspire me the most,” said Alekseeva Alena from Russia, a sophomore student majoring in the International Economics and Trade.  Kadafi Said Youssouf, a 2nd-year master’s student in the Industrial Design from Comoros noted that “ICMUN provided the best training we the future generation need; and we should learn how to cooperate with people from different countries and try to build a better world together.” Among other merits of the conference, students mentioned that ICMUN helped them to better their research skills, gain public speaking experience, practice their oral Chinese, and learn about different countries’ politics in a friendly and multicultural way.  At the end of the long but fruitful conference, student delegates, although feeling tired, could not help chatting with their new friends, writing memorable signatures on their country plates and following each other on the social media.Text | Dai YaPhoto | 南襄幻、林志威

International Students and Alumni Talk about 20th CPC Conference: My View of Today's China

On the occasion of the 20th CPC National Congress, International College of Zhejiang University recently held the first Autumn TrailWalk and a panel discussion on the 20th National Congress for International Students and Alumni of Zhejiang University. International students and alumni from Zhejiang University learned about contemporary China during the TrailWalk and talked about the 20th CPC National Congress in the West Lake.On that day, nearly 20 International students and alumni of Zhejiang University set off from the Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University and arrived at the destination of TrailWalk, the Age of Innocence Bookstore, after two hours’ hiking. The osmanthus flowers are blooming outside, International students and alumni shared their views on the issues of economy, health, community of human destiny, Chinese modernisation and Chinese cultural heritage raised in the 20th CPC National Congress, taking into account their respective majors.Nang Yein Kham, a Burmese student majoring in International Business and Economics, believes that President Xi Jinping's proposal in his 20th CPC National Congress report to adhere to a high level of opening up to the world and accelerate the building of a new development pattern with a large domestic cycle as the mainstay and dual domestic and international cycles promoting each other will greatly enhance the balance, coordination and sustainability of China's economic development. I believe that China's economic development will move towards a higher quality, more efficient, more equitable and more sustainable direction.Hazeera Begun, A medical student from India shares her view of human beings’ health: “I think The enjoyment of health is the common aspiration of all mankind, and maintaining global public health security is the common responsibility of all countries in the world. At present, the COVID-19 epidemic is fluctuating, the global economy is struggling to recover, and the world is entering a new period of turbulence and change. In the face of this serious situation, President Xi Jinping proposed to build a community of human health. This major initiative plays an important leading role in strengthening global confidence in the fight against the epidemic and working together to deal with the global public health crisis. It is also an important part of promoting the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind.”Dr Adel, a Yemeni international alumnus currently working at Hangzhou Shulan Hospital, said that he had watched the 20th National Congress with his colleagues at the hospital and had been following its progress. He said that he deeply agreed with the concept of more work, more payback emphasized in the 20th National Congress, and joining Shulan Hospital as a doctor and working hard and diligently, like millions of Chinese on duty, was the best response to the 20th CPC National Congress.Alekseeva Alena, Head of Studies at the International Students Union of Zhejiang University, this youthful Russian student, described vividly about her impressions of China since coming here. Before I came to China, my impression of China was of Chinese people working hard in the fields. However, as my plane landed in China for the first time, I was very impressed by the infrastructure of the city. Later I saw many things that I had not seen in my hometown, such as the high-speed train, shared bicycles and easy-to-use payment, which made my life in China very convenient and were the best expression of China's modernisation. Coming to Zhejiang University to study also gave me many different opportunities to see more things and experience the development and progress of China from different aspects. Regarding the shared future of human being, Khan Humayun shared his opinion：“I think that the previous years have brought tremendous challenges for the global health fraternity and so it’s really important to invest in the health sector and improve the cooperation between the medical working professionals and hospitals. China has done a commendable job in this regard by gathering all the information and making sure that all the safety precautions reach every individual of the country so that we can fight the diseases like Corona as a team together. In addition, also invested in making the vaccines and then distributing it to other nations especially the poorer ones and helped them to fight the pandemic. I am really happy to see that and hope that this medical cooperation between the countries continues.”Lee Yean Fang, a PhD student majoring in linguistics from Malaysia, introduced  Confucius China Study Plan to the students and called on them to pay attention to the Chinese studies and learn more about the excellent traditional Chinese culture, which is the spiritual bond of Chinese people all over the world.Those who share the same vision stay together. Friends from different countries met at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China out of their dreams. ZJU holds Opening Ceremony for International Students of 2022

On the afternoon of September 16, the Opening Ceremony for International Students was held on Zijingang Campus. The ceremony was conducted in both in-person and virtual formats. Leaders, faculty, freshmen and some alumni of International College attended. Roland, a Russian undergraduate student from the School of Economics, served as the host of the opening ceremony. Shen jie, Dean of Internatinal College, extended his warm welcome to incoming international students, encouraged them to: build a global outlook and contribute to global sustainable development; be self-driven and construct scientific and profound knowledge structure; actively participate in cultural exchange events and promote the multicultural development of the campus and the mutual learning of civilizations.Prof. ZHANG yifang, the teacher of Chinese Language, spoke on behalf of the faculty and staff. “All the teachers will earnestly fulfil their responsibilities and become your academic mentors and friends in life.”  she said, and she hoped freshmen can set goals, master the language, and start their journey in ZJU with a positive mind.Tungamirai Eric Mupona, from Zimbabwe, a master student majoring in International affairs and global governance, spoke as a student representative. He said that he was amazed by the warmth and friendliness of the Chinese people, impressed by China's perfect infrastructure construction, and marveled at the profound heritage of Chinese culture. He was confident about his upcoming study and life in ZJU.After the opening ceremony, Mr. LU Zhengzhong, vice dean of International College, gave a new student orientation.
